He was last seen near Spence Field; the subsequent search — the largest in the park's history — found no trace. The case remains officially open and unresolved.

Thelma Pauline "Polly" Melton, aged 58, vanished on 25 September 1981 while hiking Deep Creek Trail in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina, USA, in the company of two friends who lost sight of her over a hill. A week-long search found no trace; investigators concluded she most likely left the park by vehicle. She was declared legally dead in 1988 but the NPS continues to list her as missing.

Lars Joachim Mittank, a 28-year-old German national, disappeared on 8 July 2014 at Varna Airport, Bulgaria, after fleeing the airport medical office in a state of acute fear, scaling a perimeter fence and running into an adjacent meadow. The last confirmed record of him is CCTV footage taken at the airport. He has not been found and the case remains officially open with the BKA.

Paula Jean Welden, an 18-year-old Bennington College sophomore, set out for an afternoon walk on Vermont's Long Trail on 1 December 1946 and was never seen again. Her case remains officially unsolved, and criticism of the investigation directly prompted the creation of the Vermont State Police.

On 21 October 1978, 20-year-old pilot Frederick Valentich vanished over Bass Strait in a Cessna 182 light aircraft while flying from Melbourne to King Island. Minutes before contact was lost he radioed Melbourne air traffic control to report an unidentified aircraft above him and engine trouble, ending with the words "it's not an aircraft." Neither he nor the plane was ever found.

Her two children were nearby; her husband was away on business. The case has never been solved.

Dorothy Arnold, a 25-year-old New York socialite, left her family's Manhattan home to go shopping on 12 December 1910 and was never seen again. Her wealthy family delayed reporting her missing for six weeks. Her disappearance is often described as the oldest unsolved missing-person case in the United States.

The Sodder Children(1945)

On Christmas morning 1945, a fire destroyed the Sodder family home in Fayetteville, West Virginia. The parents and four children escaped; five other children — Maurice (14), Martha (12), Louis (9), Jennie (8) and Betty (5) — were never accounted for, and no remains were ever found in the ruins. Their fate has never been resolved.
