Joan Carolyn Risch, a 31-year-old housewife, vanished from her home in Lincoln, Massachusetts, on 24 October 1961, leaving behind a kitchen marked with her own blood type and a telephone torn from the wall. Her two children were nearby; her husband was away on business. The case has never been solved.
What is documented
Joan Carolyn Risch was a homemaker living in Lincoln, Massachusetts, with her husband and two young children. On 24 October 1961 her husband was away on a business trip. That afternoon, the Risches' young daughter returned from a neighbour's house and reported that her mother was missing and that the kitchen was covered in what she thought was "red paint." A neighbour found a trail of blood leading from the house toward the driveway. The substance was later determined to be type O blood — Joan Risch's blood type.
Inside, the telephone had been torn from the kitchen wall and placed in a wastebasket; the wastebasket had been moved to the centre of the room, and a telephone book lay open at the emergency-numbers section. Investigators recovered a bloody thumbprint and additional prints that were not Joan Risch's and have never been identified.
Search and official investigation
Witnesses reported an unfamiliar sedan parked in the Risch driveway earlier that afternoon, and, later in the day, a disheveled and apparently dazed woman walking near a stretch of road then under construction. None of these reports was ever confirmed to be Risch. An extensive investigation followed but produced no resolution; the case remains open.
Explanations considered
Among the explanations considered: an injury or medical emergency followed by disorientation; foul play by an unknown party (consistent with the unidentified prints and the unfamiliar car); and a journalist-led theory that Risch may have staged the scene and left voluntarily. The last is a media interpretation, not an investigative finding, and remains unproven.
What remains unexplained
No remains, no confirmed sighting after the day of the disappearance, and no identification of the prints found at the scene.
