Professional room acoustic measurement suite. Used by paranormal investigators to establish acoustic baselines before investigations — characterising room resonances, standing waves, and noise floor so anomalies can be distinguished from environmental artifacts.

REW (Room EQ Wizard) is a free professional acoustic measurement application originally designed for home cinema and studio room correction. For paranormal investigators, its use is pre-investigation baseline establishment: before any active investigation, REW can characterise the acoustic properties of the location — identifying room resonances, flutter echoes, standing wave nodes, and the frequency-specific noise floor.

A location with strong room resonance at 120Hz will naturally amplify sounds at that frequency — an investigator hearing a 'low rumble' at that frequency is likely encountering a room resonance excited by distant traffic or building systems, not a paranormal source. REW's measurements make this distinction objective and documentable.

REW also measures the noise floor: the continuous background noise level at each frequency band. Any EVP claim can be tested against this measured noise floor — if the alleged EVP is below the measured ambient noise floor at that frequency, it is almost certainly noise rather than a discrete event. Pair with a calibrated measurement microphone (UMIK-1 or similar) for scientifically defensible measurements.

Strengths

  • Free — professional acoustic analysis at no cost
  • Characterises room resonances before investigation
  • Waterfall plots show frequency decay and resonance nodes
  • Calibrated SPL measurements establish evidence noise floor
  • Cross-platform: Windows, Mac, Linux
  • Export measurement data for documentation

Limitations

  • Requires measurement microphone for calibrated results — laptop mic not sufficient
  • Intended for audio professionals — learning curve for investigators
  • Measurement sweep requires brief period of silence

Investigator Note

REW measures acoustic properties as a scientific tool. Its output should be used to rule out environmental explanations for alleged audio anomalies before claiming paranormal origin. Baseline measurements should be taken during the same time period as the investigation.
