Audacity
Audacity Team (open source)
The most widely used open-source audio editor in paranormal investigation. Standard tool for EVP review, spectrogram analysis, and noise reduction workflows.
Ocenaudio Team
Lightweight cross-platform audio editor with real-time effect preview. Popular with EVP investigators who find Audacity's workflow slow for rapid evidence review through long recordings.
ocenaudio addresses Audacity's main weakness: speed. Where Audacity must process the entire file before applying effects, ocenaudio previews effects in real-time as you scrub through the audio — drag the noise reduction slider and you hear the result immediately without waiting for a render. For EVP investigators reviewing 6 hours of overnight recording, this dramatically speeds up the workflow.
ocenaudio handles large files well — the application uses memory-mapped file access, so a 4GB overnight WAV file opens almost instantly and scrubs without lag. The interface is clean and intuitive: open file, view waveform, scan spectrogram for anomalies, select a region, apply noise reduction, export clip.
ocenaudio supports VST plugins on all platforms, allowing investigators to add advanced noise reduction or spectral repair plugins (such as those from Bertom Audio or similar free VST developers) to the application. The application also supports multichannel audio for spatial analysis of directional recordings.
Investigator Note
ocenaudio is an excellent rapid-review tool, but for forensic-quality EVP analysis with annotation and documentation, complement it with Sonic Visualiser for spectrogram annotation of candidate events.
