Audacity
Audacity Team (open source)
The most widely used open-source audio editor in paranormal investigation. Standard tool for EVP review, spectrogram analysis, and noise reduction workflows.
Adobe Inc.
Free web-based AI audio enhancement from Adobe. Upload a recording and the AI removes background noise, room echo, and non-vocal content, leaving primarily vocal audio. Useful as a preprocessing step for isolating alleged voice anomalies from noisy field recordings.
Adobe Podcast Speech Enhancement is a free web-based tool that applies AI speech isolation to uploaded audio files. The AI model was trained on vast quantities of human speech and background noise, and it separates the two — producing a version of the audio with substantially reduced background noise and room reverb, leaving voice content more prominent and clearer. No software installation required: upload the file, wait for processing, download the result.
For paranormal investigators, the primary use case is pre-processing noisy field recordings before detailed EVP analysis. Field recordings often contain substantial background noise — wind, traffic, HVAC, investigator movement — that makes it difficult to hear subtle audio anomalies. Running the recording through Adobe Podcast Enhancement first can reveal quiet anomalous audio content that was buried in the noise floor, making subsequent analysis in Audacity or Sonic Visualiser more productive.
An important caveat: the AI model is trained to preserve human voice content and reduce noise. If an EVP or anomalous sound is not voice-like in character, the AI may treat it as background noise and attenuate it. The tool also occasionally introduces processing artifacts in sections of very noisy audio. Always compare the enhanced output against the original to verify that any newly audible content was genuinely present in the original recording.
Investigator Note
Never use AI-processed audio as the sole basis for an EVP claim. Any apparent EVP heard in AI-processed audio must be verified against the original unprocessed recording — if it cannot be found in the original, it is an AI processing artifact, not evidence.
