Krampus
Krampus is a folkloric figure of the German-speaking Alpine regions, principally Austria (Styria, Salzburg, Tyrol) and Bavaria, with related traditions in South Tyrol, Slovenia, Hungary and the Czech lands. According to tradition, Krampus accompanies St Nicholas on the night of 5 December (Krampusnacht), threatening or symbolically punishing children judged to have misbehaved while the saint rewards the well-behaved. He is conventionally depicted as a shaggy, horned, devil-like being carrying birch rods, chains and a basket or sack. The figure survives today chiefly in costumed processions (Krampuslauf) and house-visiting customs, and since the early twenty-first century has spread widely to North America.
