Overview
Across the wet stone passages and old gateways of Akershus Fortress, stories have long gathered around a black dog called Malcanisen. It is also known as Malkanisen and, more simply, Spøkelseshunden—the Ghost Dog. The tradition does not describe an ordinary stray haunting the grounds. Malcanisen is presented as a place-bound guardian: a large and frightening black hound connected with the fortress walls, its underground spaces and the medieval entrance near Jomfrutårnet.
