FLIR Research Studio is the professional analysis companion for FLIR thermal cameras. The critical distinction from basic thermal viewing is radiometric data: consumer thermal displays show a colour-mapped image based on relative temperature differences, but FLIR cameras that capture radiometric data encode an actual temperature value (in °C or °F) at every single pixel. FLIR Research Studio reads these raw .fff or .csq radiometric files and displays the true temperature at any point you click.
For paranormal investigation, this matters significantly. Claims of thermal anomalies can be tested quantitatively: did the temperature at those pixels actually change, and by how much? FLIR Research Studio can graph temperature over time at a selected pixel or region, plot the temperature distribution across a frame, and compare multiple frames. If a 'cold spot' is a 0.3°C difference, it is likely measurement noise. If it is 2-5°C, it warrants further investigation.
Research Studio also supports temperature alarm triggering — flag frames where a pixel temperature crosses a threshold — and scripted batch analysis across video sequences. This allows an investigator to run hours of thermal video through automated analysis and extract only the frames where measurable temperature anomalies occur. Export functions produce reports with temperature scale, analysis parameters, and measurement metadata. The 2025.01 release added improved video analysis and scripting.
Investigator Note
Most consumer-grade thermal cameras do not capture radiometric data. Only FLIR cameras that specifically state 'radiometric' capability are compatible with Research Studio for quantitative temperature measurement. Verify camera radiometric capability before purchase if FLIR Research Studio analysis is a goal.
